Moms …the real MVP

20140511-094222.jpgWatching the first round of the NFL Draft and seeing all the excitement in the faces of the top prospects, I noticed a special trend; the shout-outs and first hugs to the mothers. I get this totally, especially being a mother to a son. There is just something distinctive about the mother-son relationship. Generally speaking, if anyone will be there for you, it’s mom. Moms are built this way. Not to negate fathers (my dad is awesome too) by no means but it’s Mother’s Day and our time to shine and accept our flowers while it is day.

I thank God for my mother’s presence in my life. She is a giant in our family with a true benevolent spirit. A couple months ago she became very ill from complications of her heart condition and we thought she would not make it. For the first time in my life, I was faced with the reality of one day my mother will no longer be with us. I know we all have an appointed time and life is not promised to us, but the loss of a mother, I couldn’t get ready for. It’s not because it was unexpected, but having that huge vacancy in my life when I know nothing else just seem unimaginable. Thus, I find it more of an urgency to continue that quality time with my parents to create those precious memories that I can look back on and celebrate.

Being a mother is an awesome honor. My mother took this responsibility to heart and provided me and my sisters with a great foundation built on love and discipline. My fondest memory as a child is my mother supporting my many endeavors and dragging my father (kicking and screaming) along to finance my “talents.” LOL!  At the end of the day, it’s all about being there no matter how much or little you have; being loving and supportive is not costly. In the words of NBA player Kevin Durant, moms “you’re the real MVP.” Happy Mother’s Day!
